Ray Jackson, Sr. was born July 29, 1942 in Travis County, Austin, Texas. He was the youngest brother born of nine children to the late Kermit and Geneva Jackson. He professed his faith in Jesus Christ at an early age. Over the years, Ray, Sr. served faithfully at Olivet Baptist Church and Nineteenth Street Baptist Church. Over the years, he served faithfully in the Male Chorus, Usher Board, the Brotherhood Ministry, and as a Deacon. He matriculated through Austin public schools attending: Rosewood Elementary School, Kealing Junior High School and graduated from L. C. Anderson High School in 1960. He was a decorated high school and college student-athlete.
He united in holy matrimony to Gladys Flowers Jackson and together had three children Vicki, Shonda and Ray Jr. He graduated from Southwest Texas State University and became an educator. He started his teaching career in San Antonio, TX at San Antonio Highlands High School. His invested worked with students and families produced numerous awards and recognitions. He worked in the Austin Independent School District for over 30 year.
Ray loved his family and served the Austin community endlessly, especially LBJ High School. His dedication to his students and athletes leaves a legacy of what commitment and service looks like. He started the BJ (“Black Jack”) Striders Track Club in the 1984 to further invest in the youth of east Austin. His highest priority was sharing his faith through his service to others.
Ray ran the race and fought a good fight. On May 27th, 2021 he crossed the finish line.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents Mr. & Mrs. Kermit Jackson; his daughter Shonda Jackson and six siblings: Joe Kermit Jackson, Lola Jackson Howard, Clarence Jackson, Charles Jackson, Raymond Jackson, Doris Chambers. Embracing his legacy and memory are his children Vicki Jackson and Ray Jackson, Jr. (Cynthia); his granddaughters Ashely & Trinity and grandsons Thaddius & Ray Jackson III (Tre’); his sisters Gretchen Propps of San Antonio, Texas and JoAnn Lemon (Charles) of Country Club Hills, Illinois, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and his god-daughter Ri-chard Thomas.
